Whoooooa back up. Yes, most of this is really fucking important however
A. DO NOT TELL ME THAT ‘THEY’ IS A SUPERIOR PRONOUN.
On my preferred pronoun list ‘they’ is at the bottom. The reasons for this are complicated but include the fact that within queer communities, people (who should fucking know better) have moved into this space where no one bothers to ask what people’s preferred pronoun is, and use ‘they’ to avoid being in the ~uncomfortable~ position of making space for us to say what we prefer (poor darlings, that must be a really hard thing to do). People consistently misgender people who have NEVER preferred ‘they’ and it’s really fucking annoying. When you use ‘they’ incorrectly it IS misgendering. The only time it’s okay to say it without having asked first is by prefacing your conversation with ‘I haven’t had a chance to ask what pronouns they prefer yet’. When you get the chance, ask. And don’t you dare tell me I ‘should’ use a pronoun I’m not comfortable with for the sake of creating another dominant pronoun. Another dominant pronoun might make things ‘better’ for a lot of people but it will also serve to further damage those of use who don’t fit into the new ‘third’ gender model.
B. DO NOT ASSUME THAT NON-BINARY PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO MEDICALLY TRANSITION OR THAT NONE OF THE NON-BINARY PEOPLE HAVE A MEDICAL/PHYSICAL *IDEAL*.
What we have is no CHOICE to LEGALLY medically transition. We have no ACCESS to health care. Sure, some people might be okay with that, but many of us do want access to hormones and surgery - it’s just that what that health care looks like might be very different than the ideal for binary people (and meanwhile HEAVEN FORBID, a lot of binary folks might want to make a few fucking changes to the health care system too). Some of us gain that access to medical transitions through less than desirable means because we’ve decided the sacrifices and risks are worth it, and many of us live with extremely debilitating dysphoria and are unable to do anything about it because of how incredibly fucked up the system is.
I’m so tired of having non-binary identifying people put in a homogenous block for the sake of making an easy argument - especially when it comes from people within the community. There are as many genders as there are humans in the world. STOP talking on behalf of people you don’t know anything about, even if we might use some of the same words to describe ourselves.
